Jeremy West, who founded the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) in 1989, has been awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours list.
West received his award for ‘services to the funeral industry’, having worked at West & Coe Funeral Directors since leaving school. The company is now in its 110th year of operation, and West and his son are the third and fourth generations of the family to run the business.
In response to learning of the honour, West said: “It was a massive shock when I found out. I had to re-read the letter twice, I just didn’t believe it. Of course the work I do would not exist without my father and grandfather, so I’m accepting it humbly on behalf of the whole family.”
SAIF now has over 600 members.
