CDS Group submits plan for faith-specific crem in the Midlands
While the facility will be designed to cater for all faiths, it will prioritise the unique needs of the Hindu and Sikh communities in the area
The Cemetery Development Services (CDS) Group has announced the submission of a planning application to Harborough District Council for a brand new faith-specific crematorium in the Midlands.
While the facility will be designed to cater for all faiths, it will prioritise the unique needs of the Hindu and Sikh communities in the area.
The planning application has proposed that the facility be built on a farm, where a late 19th Century farmhouse and outbuildings in East Scraptoft, Leicestershire, are located.
The disused farmhouse outbuildings and barns on the lot, which are currently vacant, would be demolished to make way for the facility. Planning documents state that the structures are in “varying states of disrepair”.
According to CDS, this much-needed facility will provide a respectful and tailored space for all, with careful attention to faith-specific traditions and ceremonies.
If the council approves this plan, it will be the second faith-specific facility in the country.
The proposed crematorium and dining hall will feature bespoke pre-ceremony rooms; two large service halls; two electronic cremators; admin and office spaces; a dining hall; post-ceremony wash facilities; and a prayer room.
CDS Group, which plans to work on the project alongside pHp Architects, ESP, Broughton Beatty Wearring, CS2 and Suono, aims to incorporate sustainable construction methods such as solar panels, water harvesting, heat recovery and electric cremators.
Harborough District Council has previously received another planning application to redevelop the farm into an entertainment complex, and although it received approval in October 2022, no works have been carried out.
