The parliamentary under secretary of state in the department for health and social care, Maria Caufield, has this week confirmed that the statutory Medical Examiner System will come into force on 9 September this year.

As a result, the NAFD has arranged a webinar with the chief medical examiner for England and Wales, Dr Alan Fletcher, on Thursday 25 April to help members prepare for the new regulations.

Under these reforms, all deaths in England and Wales will legally become subject to either a medical examiner’s scrutiny or a coroner’s investigation.

The changes coming into force in September will put all the medical examiner system’s obligations, duties and responsibilities on a statutory footing, and ensure they are recognised by law.
