Govt pledges £2m in support of families affected by Legacy case
Part of this government funding package will be used to cover costs incurred by the authorities during their work on the case
The government has announced a £2m fund to support the families affected by the investigation of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull.
This comes after Hull City Council and East Riding Council have promised to support the families after the launch of a major police investigation into the business began last month due to local concerns for the care of the deceased.
Humberside Police found a total of 35 bodies, which were later removed from premises belonging to Legacy’s Hessle Road branch.
Part of this government funding package will be used to cover costs incurred by the authorities during their work on the case, which has had to inspect every local funeral director.
In addition, the fund will cover exceptional additional costs that have arisen from the investigation and are approved by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
Hull City Council and East Riding Council have both maintained their dedicated support line in service “so that anyone affected could get help and advice”.
Authorities have officially completed their visits to funeral directors last week, concluding that the incident being investigated at Legacy “was not reflective of the wider industry”.
Julia Weldon, public health lead for Hull City Council, said: “We welcome this commitment from the government to work with us and assist with additional costs incurred as part of our response. This should enable us to provide families with the support they need at a very difficult time.
“We would remind everyone of the dedicated support line which will ensure people are directed to the advice and support they require.”
