Funeral director ‘hangs up his top hat’ after 38 years
Long-serving funeral director Paul Murray, of William Pressdee in Mumbles, Swansea, is stepping down from his role after being in the sector for 38 years.
Murray entered the profession following a phone call from his vicar on Christmas Eve, 1979, where a local undertaker told him he needed some help. He began to work for Rees Davies in 1980 and went on to have a career which spanned four decades.
Murray joined William Pressdee in 1985 and soon after, the business was acquired by Co-op Funeralcare. He then worked his way up to the role of senior funeral director and gained his Dip. FD and Dip. FM.
Murray has been coaching his two sons, James and Edward, to follow in his footsteps in the sector. He will now spend his time writing memoirs and working for a local charity, Ty Olwen Hospice.
Senior funeral director, Richard Rowlands, said: “It is going to be very strange without Paul around. Personally he is someone who has supported me and someone I can turn to whenever I need support; professionally I know that his calmness, dignity and respect will be missed by the families he has served in the Mumbles community for a very long time.”
Murray added: “Traditionally this business has always been about fathers and sons and I am grateful to Funeralcare for the support I’ve had in these last few years to bring my boys through and I now feel that the time is right to step aside.”
