Tutor launches mental health first aid training
Anne Beckett-Allen from Rosedale Funeral Training has extended her portfolio of courses to include the two-day Mental Health First Aid for adults, certified by Mental Health First Aid England.
Mental Health First Aid operates in a similar way to physical first aid, and the aims are to preserve life, prevent further harm, promote recovery and provide comfort.
The course won’t teach the recipient to be a counsellor or therapist, but will enable delegates to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis and whilst it is relevant for the general population.
Anne explained: “Many of us will have made (and failed at) new year resolutions around losing weight, giving up
smoking or trying to find a better work life balance which is easier said than done when we have to
be on call 24 hours a day.
“Why not make a commitment to doing something really positive in 2018 and make a difference?
“I’ve been teaching the Diploma in Funeral Directing for over ten years now and I’m really excited to be able to add another course to my portfolio to offer those working within the funeral profession, which as we all know can be incredibly rewarding, but also incredibly stressful, particularly at this time of year. I know first-hand how difficult the transition from work to home life can be and I know many people turn to alcohol to help them, and many more struggle to get a good night of sleep. Any employer with their salt should be taking mental health seriously and investing in the well-being of their staff.”
The course will give a deeper understanding of the issues that impact on and relate to people’s mental health and will teach practical skills that can be used every day.
Independent research and evaluation shows that taking part in an MHFA course raises awareness, boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues, encourages people to start a conversation with a person who may be experiencing a mental health issue and promotes early intervention which enables recovery.
