Charity plans bereavement training for support professionals
Brake, the road safety charity, is encouraging all victim support professionals to sign up for its free-of-charge webinar. It will focus upon supporting people who have been bereaved in high profile cases.
This essential event will provide expert guidance on the support needs of individuals who have lost a loved one in a case that has attracted media attention. It will also offer insights into how professionals can best assist families to approach the media following a sudden death.
This webinar, titled ‘Bereavement under the spotlight – supporting people bereaved in high profile cases’, will be held on Tuesday 9 May 2017.
Content covered during the event will include advice on how individuals can best deal with media attention and ‘public noise’, alongside a discussion of the pros and cons of engaging with the media, with input from expert academics and practitioners.
Sudden: Sharing best practice
The webinar is being delivered by Sudden, a project coordinated by Brake. Following Brake’s extensive experience supporting families bereaved suddenly by road crashes, Sudden was founded as a project for sharing best practice in all types of sudden bereavement support among professionals.
Sudden brings together academics, victim support professionals, and others to share and promote best practice.
Confirmed speakers at the event include Dr Sallyanne Duncan, senior lecturer at the University of Strathclyde. Sallyanne is a former journalist, who specialises in researching media reporting of sudden bereavement and trauma.
This free of charge event is relevant to anyone working with people bereaved in high profile cases, and is particularly beneficial for any practitioners, counsellors or support workers who do not have experience in approaching the media.
The event can be accessed from any location with an internet connection, and at the conclusion of the webinar there will also be an interactive question and answer session, providing professionals with the opportunity to engage in discussions with a field leader.

As the webinar will be hosted online, this event also offers an opportunity for discussion on international best practice.
