The People’s Awards name best natural burial grounds

Natural burial grounds around the UK are celebrating their achievements, following the results of The People’s Awards. The awards are based purely on the comments made by members of the public about the level of customer service and care they have received at the various burial grounds.

The winners:

  • North of Britain: Ben and Sarah Gray at Binning Wood outside Edinburgh
  • East of England: Chris and Jenny Scroby at the Willows near Leicester
  • West of England and Wales: Andy Bruce at Westhope Green burial ground, Shropshire
  • South West England: Jo Vassie at Higher Ground Meadow, Dorset
  • South East of England: Al Blake at South Downs Natural Burial Ground Hampshire
  • The overall winner, best in the UK  2016, is Higher Ground Meadow

Rosie Inman-Cook said: “Every family using one of the Association of Natural Burial Ground member sites is given the opportunity to say what they thought of the service they received. They do this using a feedback form that they send directly back to the NDC charity.”

“Hundreds of forms are analysed every year and the types of comments made about the site managers are what sway the judges.  In this way a small, simple site can compete with a large busy site, it is not about facilities, it is about the experience.”

She continued: For me, at the helm of the ANBG, it is so wonderful to know that our members are making such a huge difference to so many families every year and that I can wholeheartedly and confidently recommend them to the public. They are the creme de la creme and it so hard to decide on the best each year. There are just so many wonderful people running exceptional natural burial grounds.”
