Resting Pets Crematorium celebrates 25 years

Essex based Resting Pets Crematorium is celebrated 25 years of helping domestic pets, from hamsters through to horses.

It was back in 1991 that Margaret, a former veterinary nurse and successful kennel and cattery owner, had the idea to create a tranquil final resting place for family pets and to offer an individual cremation service.

At that time such a service wasn’t readily available across the UK, so after a year of extensive research, travelling the length and breadth of the British Isles and further afield in America with husband Andrew, Resting Pets was founded.

In the years since Margaret and Andrew Gemmill first set up Resting Pets, they’ve cared for more than 45 different species, including tiny rodents, a rescue pigeon from London and even a few of the grand Suffolk Punch horses.

Fast-forward 25 years and the reins have been handed over to daughter Kate, who continues to evolve that vision, not only with the same passion, but also by investing in the business’ future with ongoing ventures such as Resting Horses, which offers cremation services to equine owners.

It is not solely the public that Resting Pets help and support, they also look after many veterinary surgeries in and around Essex, London and Herts. Their aim is to educate veterinary staff with the tools and skills needed to look after pets, and their owners, during the time of loss and grief.

The most recent Bereavement Day was held at Wood Farm last year and was attended by approximately 100 veterinary staff, including nurses and reception team members.
