Highlands funeral home offers woollen coffin to meet eco funeral demand
One of the Scottish Highlands’ longest established funeral directors, John Fraser & Son, has become the first to offer its customers woollen coffins.
The 130-year-old family business, based in Chapel Street, Inverness, is a member of the Association of Green Funeral Directors (AGFD) which encourages funeral directors to adopt environmentally friendly working practices, and helps bring natural funerals into the mainstream.
Vicki Fraser, who runs the business with her father Ian, said: “We’ve had lots of positive comments about our new Natural Legacy woollen coffins. They’re very different from a traditional casket and people touch them and say how comforting they are.”
Each Natural Legacy woollen coffin is made in Yorkshire by 230-year-old textile mill Hainsworth from 100 per cent pure new British wool, recycled cardboard and organic cotton.
Sales of woollen coffins have risen dramatically during the past year as independent funeral directors increasingly add them to their range.
