Glasgow’s Alexandra Park has benefited from a £17k investment which funded a new pergola and bench at the centre of a Peace Garden at the park, where people can sit and remember lost loved ones.

In addition to the pergola, Glasgow City Council’s Dennistoun Area Partnership investment also brought a new path and two wooden archways.

The new additions to the park are “striking” features at the centre of a new Peace Garden, the council said, which is being created by the council in partnership with the Friends of Alexandra Park Group.

Cllr Allan Casey, chair of Dennistoun Area Partnership, said: “The pergola provides a lovely focal point in the Peace Garden where people can sit and remember lost loved ones. When complete, the Peace Garden will also provide a tranquil location within the park where people can lay tributes in memory of people who have passed away.

“The council is working closely with the Friends of Alexandra Park to source funding to create this dedicated space within the park where people will be able to sit, surrounded by nature while recalling fond memories of people who have passed away.”

According to William McLaughlin, the chair of the Friends of Alexandra Park Group, the idea of a Peace Garden was conceived during the pandemic and it will be “a place of quiet contemplation for anyone who lost loved ones”.

McLaughlin added: “I would like to thank the Dennistoun Area Partnership for helping us fund the Peace Garden, also the local councillors that have helped us along the way and of course the local community – without you we would not have a Friends Group!”

Funding from the area partnership also helped install several new black metal picnic benches, which are wheelchair accessible, beside the children’s play area.
