Jennifer Ashe and Son has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a pact outlining its dedication to supporting ex-service men and women.
The family-run funeral director is marking Remembrance Day this year by offering future employment opportunities and support for the families of veterans through discounts on services.
Jennifer Ashe and Son currently employs 20 staff at its five branches across the West Midlands and Staffordshire, some of whom have served in the armed forces.
The move was inspired by several of the company’s employees who had a former military background. Funeral service operative, Steven Matthews, has been with the business since 2021, after serving five years with the Royal Artillery in Germany.
Matthews said: “As soon as I joined Jennifer Ashe and Son, I knew it was a business that really cared about its employees, their wellbeing and future prospects.
“Having served in the forces, I understand how it feels to break out of the military lifestyle and routine, and into the working world. It can be daunting and a real challenge for many individuals. The team has helped support me with my transition into civilian work life, making it enjoyable and rewarding in the process.”
He added: “Signing the Armed Forces Covenant is really important to me, and other ex-service people. It basically means that Jennifer Ashe will do its utmost as a business to give a fair shot to people who’ve left the forces and provide the support that many workplaces simply do not.”
John Ashe, managing director at Jennifer Ashe and Son, said: “We’re honoured to be supporting armed forces leavers and their families by signing this Covenant. It was a very simple decision for us, a very effective way of showing our gratitude to ex-service men and women for the sacrifices they have made for our country and our collective safety, as well as furthering our commitment to equal opportunities.
“We want to support veterans and their families in every way possible, and are proud to offer discounts on our services for ex-service men and women.”
