Weymouth Crematorium to undergo renovation work next week

During the span of the renovation, the rose garden will be surrounded by barriers with no access until the works are completed

Dorset Council has announced a two-week renovation programme at Weymouth Crematorium’s Garden of Remembrance, which will commence from 18 September.

The crematorium is undergoing a renovation to make safety improvements to the area surface, provide better access for people using mobility aids, and to improve drainage around the area.

During the span of the renovation, the council said that the rose garden will be surrounded by barriers with no access until the works are completed.

According to the council’s plans, the rose garden will also undergo an “aesthetic redesign”, as well as plant health development and the creation of a central butterfly garden.

While machinery will be present on-site throughout the two-week period, the council said it would do all it can to keep the noise level to a minimum.

In addition, leaseholders who have a rose in this area will be contacted directly if their memorial is affected by these renovations.

The council is yet to publish the reopening dates for the crematorium.

Cllr Laura Beddow, portfolio holder for culture and communities at Dorset Council, said: “Obviously there’s never a perfect time to carry out these kinds of works in such a sensitive area, so we’re doing all we can to ensure visitors are given advance notice and aren’t disturbed by these important enhancements.

“Please bear with us whilst this work takes place. We are working hard to ensure that we are continuing to create a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary for all our visitors, and we hope that everyone will be able to enjoy our gardens for many years to come.”
