Southend crematorium undergoes ‘future-proof’ refurb
Significant changes are also being made to the internal layout of the crematorium and the chimney is being removed
Southend Crematorium has started refurbishment works to ‘future-proof’ the site.
Construction started in January 2023 to make improvements to the building and update the equipment so the crematorium remains compliant with environmental legislation.
Work will also include updating the filtration system, replacing public toilets, improving accessibility with a new ramp to the west chapel and improving facilities for staff.
Significant changes are also being made to the internal layout of the crematorium and the chimney is to be removed.
The south chapel has also been closed since the end of November 2022 in preparation for work to start.
The work means that funeral services are only available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week, so the construction work can take place.
Cllr John Lamb, cabinet member for regulatory services for Southend, said: “A lot of work has already been done to the crematorium, which will ensure the council can continue providing a service well into the future.
“In the meantime, there has been a reduction in the number of funeral services the crematorium is able to take on, while the work is being completed, but it will be for the future benefit of the City. The work should be complete, and services returned to normal in March 2024.”
He added: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and I would like to thank families, undertakers and funeral providers, for understanding the tricky situation we are in and for their patience as they wait for funeral services to be available.”
