Chesterfield cemetery chapel to be converted into holistic centre
The chapel is a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1880s
A planning application to change the use of Staveley Cemetery Chapel in Chesterfield to allow community gatherings, events, services and fitness activities, has been approved by Chesterfield Borough Council.
The site was put up for sale on a 999-year lease last year after being out of use for years, requesting offers of around £50k, much to the dismay of local residents.
Applicant Holistic Healthcare Derbyshire plans to use the site for yoga and fitness classes, death workshops, family clinics, music therapy and repair workshops amongst other things.
The Highways Authority, conservation officer and Environment Health department had no objections to the plans.
Scott Nicholas, conservation officer for the council, said: “The chapel has been empty for a number of years and consequently is at continuing risk of neglect and deterioration, hence I would very much support a new sustainable use for the building that ensures its maintenance and protection.”
