FDs sponsor RAF Squadronaires swing charity concert
P&S Gallagher Funeral Directors has sponsored the recent RAF Squadronaires annual charity concert.
At the concert in November, the RAF Squadronaires brought back the age of swing, playing Glen Miller and other big band classics to a packed house in Burgess Hill, Sussex, in aid of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Wings Appeal and in memory of Shirley Gawan who served her post as branch secretary for the Mid Sussex RAF Association for many years until her death in January 2012.
Matthew Gallagher of P&S Gallagher presented a cheque for more than £1,800 to local RAFA branch chairman Harry Gawan, which will go directly to the Wings Appeal to support servicemen past and present.
The Squadronaires can be traced back to 1939 when many of London’s professional musicians were recruited into the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. It was then suggested that they form what was to become the Royal Air Force Dance Orchestra, later known as the Squadronaires.
