Midlanders most comfortable with funeral planning, survey finds

Some 41% of people from the Midlands feel comfortable discussing funeral arrangements with family, making them the most confident out of all UK regions in discussing end-of-life plans, according to a survey by Golden Charter.

Despite the Midlands’ confidence in discussing funeral plans, the data shows that 51% of adults in the region have misconceptions of what a funeral plan entails, with only 5% having a funeral plan in place.
With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to affect Brits and funeral expenses rising, many are facing the risk of funeral poverty.
While the average cost of a standard funeral in the UK is higher than that of a pre-paid funeral plan, only one in 10 people in the UK are currently considering purchasing one.
Sorya Kousourou, chief customer officer at Golden Charter, said: “Planning for death can be daunting – it’s not really anything anyone wants to do. It’s encouraging to see that Midlanders are leading the way in discussing funeral plans, but there is still much work to be done to increase awareness of pre-paid plans, especially considering rising funeral costs.
“Funeral plans bring more than just financial benefits – they also minimise difficult decisions that need to be made during a stressful time for families. It’s important for anyone considering a pre-paid funeral plan to have open, transparent conversations with their family to ensure their wishes are met, and their family supported, following their passing.”
