Paisley’s Hawkhead Cemetery to complete refurb by June

The improvement works will include drainage, road resurfacing and kerb works

Renfrewshire Council has commenced improvement works at Hawkhead Cemetery and is expected to be complete by the end of June.

John McGeady Ltd was given a works contract for the project, valued about £230,000 minus VAT, after receiving the seal of approval from council members at the finance board in late March.

The improvement works will include drainage, road resurfacing and kerb works.

The first phase of the works already began to the left of the main entrance on Monday 1 May and will be complete by Friday 2 June.

On completion of phase 1, the second phase at the back of the cemetery will commence and is estimated to be completed on 30 June 2023.

Karen Anderson, Renfrewshire Council’s sustainability and place manager, said: “We have been in contact with local funeral directors to ensure that burials and interments can continue to take place during the period of works and contractors on site will be as respectful as possible.

“All areas of the cemetery will be open for funerals and visitors using the signposted diversions, which may require taking a longer route than normal. We would ask visitors to the cemetery to avoid all areas coned off and as always to be respectful and stay on the main routes, taking care not to drive over graves or pedestrian paths.”
