Consultation launched for new crematorium at Roselawn Cemetery

Belfast City Council has launched a consultation on plans for a new crematorium at Roselawn Cemetery.

While the existing crematorium has been in operation for 60 years, it is currently operating with 3,500 annual cremations rather than the 700 the site was designed to handle.

In turn, the proposals include two ceremony rooms, boosting capacity to roughly 4,500 cremations per year and improving cremation services for families and mourners.

Located within the existing cemetery grounds, the plans intend to create “a new dedicated road access” from the Ballygowan Road, and will see the current property refurbished to provide amenities to the new crematorium.

Set with “access car parking, waiting room and generous toilet facilities”, the new ceremony rooms would each seat up to 200 people.

The new building would also achieve a “very good” BREEAM sustainability rating, and will include “extensive use of daylight and natural ventilation”.

A pre-application consultation on the construction has been opened to the public as of 9 August, and will run until 25 October 2021.
